I have the Circa portable punch and it makes short work of these things. I haven't tried to shoe horn in any DIY templates yet. That may be on the horizon, when the snow gets deep around here. As soon as a sheet gets filled and then crossed out, I simply pull a blank from the back and put it up top. I have gift lists, to-do lists, future-might-want-to-do lists, shopping lists, want-to-buy lists and of course acts as a jot pad in a real pinch.
