Spalding wooden fountain pen

I saw a post on another blog (see URL below) that mentioned the A.G. Spalding & Bros. fountain pen. I'd never heard of it, so I decided to look for it. The blogger mentioned jetpens.com as the source, so that's where I looked. You can find the photo there.

The Spalding pen is a metal bodied pen with an unusual and attractive appearance. It has a short metal cap that snaps onto a metal barrel sheathed in wood. The wood appears to be real. The one I bought for $33 has a maple body in a natural "beige" color. It's also available in other stained finishes, such as a dark brown, black, or orange, or with a translucent plastic barrel or a solid silvery metal barrel. It's made in Japan.

The nib is a very smooth steel nib in medium. The smoothness is no surprise, since that seems to be a hallmark of Japanese made pens, but the medium is unusual, as most Japanese pens tend to run to fine nibs. The metal parts, judging from the weight, are probably made of plated brass (another source says aluminum, but it feels heavier than that). The pen has a surprisingly good heft to it and feels solidly made.

The pen uses short international cartridges, but if you take the cartridges out (the barrel can hold two), you might be able to get a converter to fit. I'm going to try later on.

Anyway, it's a cool looking pen and I thought it was a pretty good bargain.
