A Special Invitation to Template Developers

There's something going on behind the scenes at DIYPlanner that many folks may not know about, and it concerns the vast array of talent possessed by our members. It seems like every day I receive at least one email (sometimes up to a dozen) from eager folks that ask for advice or feedback regarding their template creations. Some folks are learning how to cobble together their first attempts in OpenOffice.org Draw, others have laid out a slick series of forms in professional graphics applications, and yet others are creating software applications (in online scripting languages, databases, or even stand-alone cross-platform apps) to dynamically create calendars, to-do lists, or specialty forms. It seems a pity not to bring these folks together so they can benefit from each other.

And so, today, I'm announcing a new Google Group called "DIYPlanner Template Development" (diyplanner-tmpl) for that very purpose.

Its goals:

  1. Provide for discussion between creators of templates and forms, whether static (e.g., PDF/Word) or dynamic (programmed);
  2. Provide a forum for more experienced designers to provide feedback and advice to less experienced designers;
  3. Allow for the testing of templates-in-progress, in a closed and secure (i.e., non-public) environment;
  4. Facilitate the creation of various sub-projects, such as one for dynamic calendar creation, and another for the official Widget Kit; and
  5. (This is my selfish reason...) Do away with some redundancy on my part. I often offer the same advice a hundred times -- the quality of said advice tends to diminish and be delayed more each time. Besides, from reading the forums here, I have no doubt that others can offer advice that far exceeds my own.

We'll also be discussing a better system for checking and approving new template submissions, setting up some project leaders, and offering preview releases of key items like the Widget Kit, calendar scripts, and so forth. We might even take a shot at bridging the digital-analog divide.

This will be a restricted group, not a public one, since I know that many of the developers (myself included) would rather not want the public to see a pre-release version of forms or software. It also facilitates frank discussion, since no one has to worry about their idle musings and half-baked drafts being made available to the rest of the world.

So, if you're a template creator (or a wanna-be template creator) and are interested in joining our little group, please send me an email at diyplanner [!at!] gmail [!dot!] com and I'll add you to the list. You can choose to have the group delivered as regular email or abridged email (once per day), or just come to the group page and read it whenever you can.

The Qaballa of Business

The "Q" is actually how the Hebrew letter should be transliterated in English and follows the style rules of the Encyclopedia Judaica. And since there is no correct way to spell Hebrew words in English anyhow...
I may as well have a "ball" (ah!).

My interest in this group is to create a template for the Qaballa of Business. I had planned it to be an e-book but I'm not sure and would love to have feedback from the larger community. I have been struggling with how to release it, actually, and did not want to do so through for-profit channels if I could avoid it. I'm glad I found D*I*Y.

Reb A.

Sounds Interesting

I would love to see it discussed in the forums and then we can whip up the necessary forms amd pages. We can bat the "ball" about as necessary for understanding.

The Developer's Group is being set up to create software to generate forms. Does your idea involve a single form that could be reproduced on a copy machine or do you need dynamic content -- like predated daily/weekly calendar pages ?

Is the group active?

Is the Google Group mentioned above active? I emailed the address, but I have not heard back. I did not find the group on Google (maybe it is hidden as an invitation-only group?). Just wondering, I wanted to lurk and see what it was all about and see if I could contribute in some way...

Or do I have to be an active template developer to gain access?

Please try again

I did not see any membership requests come thru recently.
You can contact me directly if you continue to have problems.

OK, just did

I sent another email to the address mentioned above (diyplanner). Is there another way to do a membership request?

Did you get the invite ?

I sent an invitation from the group.
Did you get it ?
