Online/Offline "jack of all trades" ?

I'm looking for something like Backpack... I signed up and was very excited but soon discovered many of the functions I wanted require payment.

I love the idea of keeping images, files, links and all that jazz all in one place. I have a few ideas brewing and I would love to have a resource like this...

Anyone know of something like this either online or for a pc ?

Thank you :D

Have you considered....

... a self contained wiki ?

I'll be honest... those things scare me >.<

I was afraid of RSS and got that down... but for some reason, I read about that wiki stuff and rails stuff any I want to hide under my bed.

TiddlyWiki is just a web page with some JavaScripts. You can store it on a thumb drive and carry it around.

Tiddlywiki

Don't think of it as a wiki. It's really easy to work with. The initial template can even talk you through it. Give it a whirl. You might be presently surprised...

Related question: is there

Related question: is there anything like Backpack for servers in open-source, preferably PHP? I hate relying on other web sites if I can put something up on my own server, and hand-coding everything can take too much time.

ETA: duh. I can set up my own wiki. *smacks self in forehead*

How does one go about

How does one go about setting up a wiki? Is there a wiki for dummies out there for scaredy-cats like me? :)

Just try it

TiddlyWiki is that easy.
From the site:

GettingStarted
The easiest way to learn about TiddlyWiki is to use it! Try clicking on various links and see what happens - you cannot damage tiddlywiki.com or your browser. (Use the close all button over on the right to clear all the displayed tiddlers and start again).

There is an extensive Community documentation wiki, including an invaluable FAQ. Other useful guides include:

Dave Gifford's TiddlyWiki for the Rest of Us
Morris Gray's TW Help - TiddlyWiki help file for beginners
DmitriPopov's TiddlyWiki quick reference card.
When you're ready to create your own TiddlyWiki on your computer, follow the instructions in DownloadSoftware and SaveChanges. There is also a free hosted service at http://tiddlyspot.com/ that makes it easier to share your TiddlyWiki with others (for more demanding applications there are several other ServerSide solutions available). There are also a couple of introductory screencasts from JimVentola and LeonKilat.

Wikis

Well, using something like TiddyWiki doesn't require any setup. What I'm installing requires web space on a server that has PHP and mySQL.

so I dug around on the innerweb

I discovered: ZOHO.com

They seem to have everything, including a "Zoho Planner" which looks promising. I can upload pictures, link to things, attach files, create to do lists... just like backpack but this is FREE.

Check it out... what do you think?

It looks like you need to be online.

Unlike a self-contained wiki as suggested.

You did ask for something with Offline features.

Actually I wanted anything

Actually I wanted anything like backpack for free... online or offline :D

I am going to conquer my fear of wiki's though! Its on my list of "next actions"

zoho planner

have you try zoho planner? oops. I see this was suggested and I can't delete my comments. So I'll just plunge along to say a few things about zoho planner. I tried backpack but there was a limit to how many pages one can have. This annoyed me to no end. Zoho is Free without limits. I didn't use the file download or other features much. I did try to implement the GTD in this format and it seems to work. Now I use mostly paper products to do the next thing.

I am loving ZOHO planner! I can't do as much with google notebook... the only thing I don't like so far is the people I want to share the "planner page" with have to join Zoho.com. Not a huge deal - I just hope they do! :)
