Rustico Traveler's Journal

Hi DIYers,
Have you had a Rusitco Journal? I've been asked to review and give feed backs on this great notebook. Isaac, the founder / designer, wants to know if there can be any improvements. So far I can't think of any. Here's the post: Rustico Journal Arrival

Hmmm....

Some fake person decided to leave a lot of comments. Maybe they don't like the journal lol.

But useful

I hate these spammers who drop a slew of posts in a thread. However, more than once they have brought a long dormant thread to light that would otherwise be forgotten. At least something useful comes from their useless and pitiable advertising of useless products.

I think I'd still prefer it

I think I'd still prefer it if we had no spammers, and we can have someone to randomly bump posts from time to time. I'll volunteer. :)

Second that

The issue is allowing non-registered "guests" to post. Then you get these low-lifes that set up these automated spewing thingies that have the effect you saw here in this thread.
I'd prefer to have that feature turned off, but The Folks in Charge feel differently. I have not asked for detailed explanation, but I would be interested to know the reasoning.

One of the reasons dougj

One of the reasons dougj gave:

Many of these spammers actually register on the site, either manually or via a special scripts that register users automatically. Some of you may remember the notorious Chinese shoe spammers from last year who registered for several new accounts a day and posted hundreds of messages.

We can eliminate the auto registration via special scripts by putting in a word verification system.

My apologies if this is already being done.

"Actually, dougj gave three reasons"

Thanks, Lisa, I had forgotten that.
Well, we got some good discussion out of it if nothing else.
It is going to cause some pain one way or the other -- either some spam that gets thru the cracks or the added fuss of counter-measures like captchas.
Make you wonder about the spammers.

im pretty quick

I try very hard to check the forums frequently to zap any spam that slips thru the filters... be patient... I'm usually one the way :P

Was anything ever decided

Was anything ever decided about having captchas? The other thread on spam had some people who didn't like them, but most people saw them as a necessary evil.

Also, while I'm pretty sure there's a trust issue here, if you want volunteers for cleaning out spam posts, I'm willing to help whenever I check the site.

Hey Sara...

did we get an IP to block from the "faker" ?
I hang on the site and zap spam when I see it as well.

Time zone

It seems I get to see spam for longer being in Europe. I'm five or more hours ahead of you and as I check the forums in the morning that means y'all still asleep. But as I said at least the spammers hit old threads that have been overlooked. However, like many others I wish these unsocial net-users would go off, curl up and die rather than flooding this excellent resource with their nonsense.

Hey, I'm in Malaysia, 12

Hey, I'm in Malaysia, 12 hours ahead of the US East Coast, so I get to see spam quite early on, too.

The latest one, in this same thread, is having fun.

Actually I understand

Actually I understand wanting to have guests able to post, but it would be nice to have something extra to help filter against spam. Captchas are an obvious one, but if the powers that be really don't like them, then there may be some alternatives. An extra field on the comment form saying 'don't fill me in' or similar.

Of course, you'd have to find a drupal module to implement whatever solution sounded good, which may be easier said than done.

Oh. A quick google search found this spam module http://drupal.org/project/spam, which in addition to having a learning filter (albeit without the sharing feature of akismet), has a 'report as spam' option for normal users of the site. It might be worth taking a look at to see how well/if it works.

i think

I believe we have a spam feature that "learns"... trust me yall dont see but a sliver of the spam this site gets :)

It does (at least according

It does (at least according to the other article), what I wanted to draw attention to was more the report spam button so more people can help fight it without needing any special access. However, if it requires a privileged user to go through and check all the items reported as spam, then it probably isn't worth it.

Y'all dont see but a sliver of the spam this site gets

I can vouch for that.
I was shocked when I got added permissions to post my applications.
But I think it also changed my perspective. I think we have a good set of filters that catch most of the junk. I just wish there was a way to discourage spammers (like the pin-head that keep hitting this thread) that does not involve either stooping to their level or making life complicated for legitimate users.

Trying to drag this back on subject

I know, it's so much fun talking about spam, but I for one am actually interested in knowing if anyone is using this.

I am considering it as a gift for a very particular but very dear to me person; but if it's not what it's cracked up to be, it will sit on a shelf and stare at me with resentment burning in its eyes.... well, you get the idea.

Clearly this thread

is a favorite one for spammers. What is it about the Rustico Traveler's Journal that is so attractive to spammers?

Lovely, but too "precious"?

It looks like a lovely journal. My only concern would be that it's too lovely - meaning that many folks might find it too precious to actually use. I mean, I've heard of folks who think Moleskines are too nice to use! Well, there's not much that can be done about that other than maybe enclosing a leaflet of some sort urging (and motivating) buyers to actually write in it.

From a practical angle, I'd be interested in knowing how well the paper takes using a fountain pen.

Buy the journal?

Do you think if we all just buy the journal it will stop the spam? It would be a good excuse. I had to buy another journal to help out one of my favorite websites. Yes, I know I have a ton of blank journals, but I’ll get to them all in this lifetime, honest. And this one was for a good cause.

It will only stop when we buy the Super Special Package (tm) including halloween costume where you are dressed as a giant fountain pen.

Will it help if the thread

Will it help if the thread title is renamed?

It could help, but...

But if you rename it, that just makes it harder to find all the spam. ;)

I doubt it, I get the

I doubt it, I get the feeling that somehow this particular page (known only as http://www.diyplanner.com/node/4584 to the spammers) managed to get on a spammer list. Renaming the title of the thread won't change the URL, so the spammers will be able to find it, but we won't.

It could just be locked down

but that would ruin the proper discussion about the journal.

Is that an issue though?

Looking back, all the posts are about the spam. No seems to care to comment on the journal. If someone wants to truly discuss it, a new thread can be started.

I'd love to talk about it, but...

I'd love to discuss the journal but I'd have to buy it first. I keep spending my extra money on other things like The Pencil of the Month Club which I just joined today.

Looking back, all the posts are about the spam.

Not really. There was a post by GCostigan on Tue, 2007-09-25, at 20:36, who wanted to know if anyone is using the journal as he (she?) is considering it as a gift.
