Ideas??-- using the cover of an old book as binder cover

I'm looking to repurpose some great old hardcover books i got recently. i basically bought them for their covers thinking it would be great to turn them into binders for later use as planners and sketchbooks. problem is, a lot of vintage books are 9" long and less than 1" thick. so i'm on the search for 3-ring binders that come in a variety of sizes (especially 8.5"l, .5"w.) i guess i'd be looking for something inexpensive since i'll just be removing the binder mechanism and discarding the rest-- unless someone knows where to get just the binding strip and rivets, in a variety of sizes, that would be fantastic. any ideas or experience in this kind of project out there? thanks! -caitlin.
