D*I*Y Planner web server broke?

Since Christmas week the response time of diyplanner.com has gone through the floor for me. Pages take ages to load, if they load at all --- connection terminated or connection timed out have become very common sights for me. Or I'll see the text but without background, images, or even the results of CSS application. This slow-down only affects diyplanner.com as all my other sites (including other Drupal powered places) are running fine.

The only thing that has changed here recently is that my Internet connection has become faster. Firefox is at the latest 3.0.5 release, AdBlockPlus is at its latest plus all the block lists are up-to-date --- only AdBlockPlus rules that apply for this site are of my own devising and date from months ago.

Anyone else seeing a degradation in response time for this site?

It's the site. We are being hammered.

Doug told me that our site was mentioned elsewhere and we are getting a lot of hits and template downloads due to that publicity. Hold on, it should ease up.

Ah it's that time of year

Should have thought more when I said "the slow-down ahd started between Christmas and New Year" and that others might therefore be looking for better planners than they already had available and had found this web site.

It's both good and bd news. Good news for those who come looking for good planner advice --- and welcome to you --- and bad news that the web site is being overtaxed by all the new people. Still slow response because of new visitors has to be a good thing for us all. I should have resolved to have more patience. :-)

Since yeserday

I have also had any problems getting on the site. Most often I either have to wait about 2 min for the site to load and each page to load and other times it takes so long that it just disconnects. Where was the site mentioned that it is causing this much of a problem? Is there anything that can be done about it?

Me too here in Idaho!

I am just glad to know that it's not my computer. I guess we have been spoiled by all the good service and products. I'll try again at 5am! Good luck!

Me too...

Very slow here, but we typically have oddball problems. I never thought it was the site--at least until yesterday, when it got reallly bad. This morning, however, it's running fine. We'll see what happens you folks sleeping in the States wake up, however. I hadn't thought of server overload from something like ygor mentioned.

Would've said something earlier...

but I've not been able to get on for days. Today I can get on, mostly, if I wait long enough...but can't get around well enough to make it worth it. Hope this can be resolved. If it's really just new people visiting, they sure won't want to be regulars with the system barely functional.

Major traffic...

We've been linked a few times recently by LifeHacker and some other major sites. (A combination of the new dynamic templates and the annual "plan your year with a customizable paper planner" thing.) At times the traffic is spiking at over 400 simultaneous users, and given our old hardware and software, that's causing a bit of a crunch on the backend. We should be levelling off within another day or two.

all my best,
dj

At the risk of overinflating my ego ...

Can you tell how many times the new Dynamics have been downloaded ?

So many Microsoft machines to infect !

great to hear from dougj

great to hear from dougj that many are coming here.

So many Microsoft machines to infect !

Yeah, takes me back to the days of Windows v1.0 when Norton anit-virus declared WIN.COM a virus; how prophetic that was.

Ygor.....

and his dynamic ego :-)

Speaking of....

.... your blog, Super. I'm still waiting for something on trains to show up on it. ;-)

Trains always run late...............

Leaves on the line at Polmont.......

More like you're waiting on anything at all to appear on my blog. Must remember my new year's resolution - more blog writing!

Yup

But also hoped for something train-related. Love trains. :-D

As a priority

I shall look out my pictures of the National Railway Museum in York. Gotta love that Mallard!

Otherwise it'll just be moaning about the lateness of the service in a Reginald Perrin sort of way....

That could only have been written by someone experienced in the way of "British Rail". ;-) Theor other excuse is "the wrong type of snow"; I am constantly surprised that their excuse isn't "the wrong sort of train".

Maybe ygor could come over an sort out "BR" for us.

Sure...

Who has a guest room or comfy couch I can sleep on ?

lost template?

Did the template I submitted a few days ago get swallowed up in the slowness?

I am seriously adding to the traffic by checking every chance I get to see it if appeared. Was there some problem with it?

You talking about this one ?

That is it

Thanks. First template I've submitted and about time I did so.

DIY IS BACK!

As of this morning, I can navigate and post freely/quickly! Yeah!

Must be timezone linked

Here in England it appears to be just as slow as it was late last year ;-)

more like....

.... you are sharing the same 1/2" pipe with the rest of us here in Europe. I never get screaming speeds on US-based web sites, but this week's DIYP has almost set new records. Right now, it's loading quite well--not as well as right after the last upgrade, when the only rip-roaring US site I had was DIYP, but it's not so bad right now--at last. ;-) It's kind of funny how the slow-down occurred the few days i had lots of time on my hands. Now, life is picking up again, and so is DiYP. :-D

Difference between night vs. day surfing

I feel like during the day the site is a bit slow, but it seems much faster during the night. I am in the US in the Eastern Time Zone.

Daytime, night time, any time

My original post concerned day time access; that's day time European style. But because of my work schedule I may be checking D*I*Y Planner at any part of the day or night. As predicted the slow down has eased recently, which I hope isn't disappointment on the part of the new-comers who came and went. However, there are still occasions when the server response is very slow.
