Name and Address Book

I have a lot of names with associated key info in my Mac OS X "Address Book". It's a nice file but the printing options are terrible. I like to create a printed version of the files in a book format that allows me to lay out the various info components in an efficient and readable way. Apple's address book puts the name at the left, some info in the middle, and phone numbers on the right. Some of the phone numbers are long Euro numbers and some of the e-mail addresses are long as well. So, they either run off the page or skip down to a second line. For example, I would like the name (Last, First) in bold on the left with the phone numbers beneath the name. I would like some other data below the phone numbers. Then addresses on the right in a stack. In other words, lay out the info in groups according to the way I like it, not the way Apple forces me to. I've run into the same frustrating situation with Google's G-mail "Contact" and Yahoo's "Contacts". Do any of you readers have a template or know of software to remedy my dilemma?

I'm not schooled on Mac

but does the application you are using allow you to export the information into a tab delimited file? If so, you could pull it into Excel, or the Mac equivalent and then format it the way you like.

Well...

Address book will export in VCARD format

Start with a spreadsheet of data

If you can export your addresses to a spreadsheet, you can develop the format that you desire, using a word processing program to merge the information.

I developed the school directory this year which lists all of the families, their contact information, and their children. We started with an excel spreadsheet with all of the necessary fields. Then I just did a merge with MS Word into a booklet format. The merge did the work for me -- just had to make a few tweaks here and there for formatting purposes.

Good luck!

export options

There are options out there for exporting Address Book to tab-delimited or comma-delimited files. Look for export to CSV. Here is one I found: MacUpdate.com

But I don't know if it will export the latest versions of Address Book.

But like others said, once exported, you can open up in Excel or Numbers, or maybe even Pages.

And now that I've mentioned Pages. If you have it installed, you might be able to create an Address Book template there, and use the mail merge feature to get what you want. In any case, there are options out there.
