Hi.

Print a few out and bind them together into a little booklet. There's space for binding at the top of the page to make a flipbook (if using rolla/circa) or just staple a few sheets together.

DH and I are lightweights when it comes to wine. I have relatives who are very serious about wine, and they've been teaching DH a little about appreciating wine. But we needed a way to record at the very least what we liked and didn't like so we knew what to buy/not buy again.

So this form is simple, just to record what it was, where it came from, whether you'd buy it again, and a few notes. So you could write down the color, major flavor components, sweet/dry characteristics, what food to serve it with, etc. in the notes.

Just a quick and dirty form--made and bound in a few minutes. The source file (ODG) and the PDF are included--it's a one-up form, but I'm sure you could modify it to be a four-up with little difficulty.

    MS Word 2007 Planner Classic Size Week on a page, Monday start

    This is a basic planner with a week on a page.

    Previously I used tables, but they're so difficult to format that now I'm just using tiny margins and putting in a page break between pages, so it should be easier to reformat and change if you prefer a Sunday start, for example. I print the week pages out in Landscape, 2 pages to a page, to one side of Letter paper and print the notes pages (at the end of the file) on the back of the pages, then cut the pages apart down the middle. I take them for spiral binding. They may also work for hole punching and placement in binders, maybe with wider inside gutters.

    Warning: I've started using "A5" as shorthand for Classic or 8.5 x 5.5. Actually I'm in the US and use letter size paper and cut it down the middle (landscape orientation) to get Classic size.

    Beware--The week of July 4 needs to be corrected. Sorry.

    Student Timetable

    A simple letter-sized (landscape) student timetable.

    Because of the post http://www.diyplanner.com/node/280 in the forums, I'm in the process of digitalizing some of the forms I used while in school and the ones I'm using now that I'm in college. This timetable is the first one that I finished, so I would like to know what you think about it.

    This is a simple timetable, with a column for the times for each period and a weekly schedule. It has space for 12 periods in a day, and is Monday-Saturday. I usually had a copy of this form as the first page of all of my binders, so I always knew where I was supposed to be :).

    When you print this template, select the option "none" where it prompts you to scale the file. It's intended to be a Letter (8.5" x 11") size template.

    I made two versions, one in English, and the other in Spanish (my native language ;D).

    hPDA Expanding File

    Make your own expanding file (like the popular Moleskine version) with as many pockets as you want.

    This template is for a single expanding pocket. It's a little wider (0.5" wider, actually) than a standard 3x5 index card, and 2.75" high so the cards can be visible over the top edge. The pockets can be glued together to make a multi-pocket expanding file, similar to the Moleskine version. The only reason I made this is because I was too lazy to drive to the store and buy a Moleskine.

    Another great modification/addition to this template would be gluing a flap-style cover over the top, so the cards aren't falling all over the place.

    A few notes:

    • I used permanent double-sided tape to attach the tabs AND to attach the pockets together, and it works very well. It holds better than glue does right away, so I recommend it.
    • The corner fold (the only angled lines in the template) are a real pain in the neck, but don't lose hope, because it CAN be done. If Smead can do it, so can you. I find that it helps to fold the wide sides of the pocket up, and then mash the corner fold in there BEFORE cutting any tabs out.
    • I used cover-weight (65-lb.) cardstock for this, and since I was gluing more than one pocket together, it provided the right flexibility but was still sturdy enough when done. Anything thicker might be too hard to fold properly.
    • Last tip: scoring the creases (with the dull side of a butterknife, or a letter opener) helps the paper crease neatly. Use a ruler to guide the butterknife along the straight lines.

    Also, there are two templates: one requires a printer capable of borderless letter-size printing, and has 2.75"-high sides all the way around. The other template can print on any printer that can handle half-inch margins, but the "expanding" sides of the pocket are only 2.25" high.

    - write down potential action items and the priority; write also the name of the person to which you're assigning the task
    - write also action items that were brought up during the previous meeting for follow-up
    - prepare your visual aids, e.g., illustrations, diagrams, charts, etc.
    - you may optionally distribute copies to the attendees not only to help them track the meeting but to provide a paper with which they could also write their notes on

    Here is a PDF that prints 4-up weekly calendar pages on one letter size paper. They are rotated so you can fold the paper and make a 'booklet'.

    Here is a PDF that prints 4-up weekly calendar pages on one letter size paper. They are rotated so you can fold the paper and make a 'booklet'.

    You can either cut the paper to make 4 quarter-letter size pages, or you can fold the paper twice to make a mini booklet. If you fold the long way first you will get a regular book that opens to the left. If you fold the short way first you will get a reporters notebook that opens up. I put in generous inner margins so you can fold many booklets and nest them together to make a book with more pages.

    I stick a paperclip or ring binder through the upper left corner to bind it all together better. I also cut a cardboard backing the same size as the front and back cover.
    The result is a 4.25" wide book, which is exact the largest width that can comfortably fit in my back pocket. It goes everywhere with me.

    I created this with the amazing Multivalent Tools.
    1) Download them at http://multivalent.sourceforge.net/index.html
    2) Print your own 4 pages as letter size seperate PDF files
    3) Put the PDFs in the same directory as Multivalent
    4) Combine the 4 pages into one PDF:

    I’ve added a categories column, and category legend (so you only use 1 letter to specify the category) with a couple lines (maybe too small) for entering your own category.

    Every now and then, drop it in your inbox for processing and grab a fresh one.

    Modified PlannerPad pages for GTD

    This is an MS Word template that I whipped up to make the concept of the PlannerPad more functional for me. It includes space for Next Actions by Category (@ Personal, etc.), Next Actions by Day, and a Weekly Calendar.

    These pages have bigger lines and more note-taking space than the ones in the PlannerPad do. I am using these pages for GTD, but they can be used with any organizational system. Pages are 9.5 by 11 inches, and can either by punched and inserted in a binder (as I did), or bound at your local copy shop. I've included one generic Left-side page and one generic Right-side page. Pages can be printed on both sides of a sheet of paper. I'm still note sure what paper to print this on. I started with light Stardust cardstock, with durability in mind, but realized after printed out six weeks' worth of pages that I might be better off sacrificing a little durability and using a lighter paper so that my planner doesn't end up being too heavy. I really like using the Stardust paper, though, as it makes my planner much more attractive and therefore a little more enjoyable to use. (The PlannerPad is a great concept, but the paper was not very attractive to me.)

    Business Card Case - Origami Style

    Create your own six-pocket case using one letter or A4 sized piece of paper. Holds up to 24 business cards or about 6 credit cards.

    The attachment includes step-by-step instructions with photographs so you can fold your own business card case from a single piece of paper.

    I used a piece of paper that had a printed pattern on one side and plain white on the other. However, both sides will show in the final product, so you may want to find paper that has color/pattern on both sides.

    The folds are simple and there is no cutting. The result is a small paper rectangle with six pockets--four flap pockets and two full-depth pockets. The pockets hold everything reasonably securely, but if you're nervous about it you can be extra sure with a binder clip, rubber band, or some other extra device if you wish. This is not a 'jotter,' it's just a set of pockets.

    You can stuff more than 4 business cards into each pocket, but if you do that in all the pockets it gets pretty tight. About 4 cards in each of the 6 pockets is still reasonably convenient and easy to put in/take out, etc.

    If you have a small clip pen, you could attach the pen along the 'spine' of the case when you're done folding, if you wish.

    MS Word 2007 Classic one-page-per-day planner

    Simple MSWord one-page-per-day 2007 planner.

    One page per day, Classic size. Holidays are indicated. Hours 7am to 10pm are marked, but there are no lines. There are two Notes pages at the end of the file. You could use ClickBooks or some other software to deal with imposition--I was originally thinking I'd need a full day plus a notes page per day, so I was going to print this as two days per page and just print notes pages on the back of the day pages.

    You might look through and make sure the dates are right--I've done so, of course, but another pair of eyes would be good.

    I get some Classic size envelopes bound in, plus some pocket pages I make from light poster board, in order to have space for receipts, etc. If you get it spiral bound and use the pages, be sure to have them put in a spiral big enough to hold all the extra junk, and get a heavy vinyl or plastic cover--last year my cover came off in September. Otherwise I've been very happy with mine.

    Dutton Speedwords lessons and dictionary (compact size)

    I have wanted to learn some kind of shorthand for a long time, but learning real "secretarial" shorthand takes years of work. It's like learning a new language, from what an expert tells me.
    A little while ago I found an alternative. "Dutton Speedwords," a system developed by its namesake back in the 50s, is an alphabetic shorthand system. I found some quick lesson material (a crash course, really) and a fairly extensive dictionary translating speedword constructions into their plain-english equivalents. I used the latter to make a to- and from-speedwords translation dictionary, and the former I just formatted in a style similar to the DIYPlanner widget set. The lot is presented here in one lump of a PDF, all formatted in the 4.25x6.75" size. I haven't bothered with a screenshot here for two reasons: first, my screenshot utility was only installed on my other computer, which recently bit the dust. Second, a translation dictionary isn't terribly photogenic. That's what this file consists of: pages of instructions, and pages of word translations. Download it and see if Speedwords is right for you!

    The pages are formatted as regular planning pages, with a front and back to each. I just printed them straight out, which was relatively easy. Then I hole-punched them and put them in a compact binder.

    Hipster Portrait Forms

    A few forms for the hipster, in Portrait orientation. Includes a Schedule, Task Plan, What/Where/When, and an untitled ruled card with a grey column on the right.

    These are a few forms I've been fiddling with. They're for 3x5 cards, but they'll scale to 4x6 just fine.

    Line spacing is .20 inch, wider than the standard DIY hipster forms.

    I use the schedule and task plan back-to-back. One of these per day shows me what meetings and appointments I have as well as my intended (but unscheduled) actions for the day. There's a spot for a time estimate on the Task Plan, so you can calculate just how many things to put on the plan based on how much time you have available.

    The What/Where/When card is my new favorite. It's incredibly versatile because the title bar includes a prompt for what it is, where it is, and when it is. The rest of the card is checklist-style. So this card could be your meeting agenda/notes, a shopping list, brainstorming for a project, or a bundle of notes from a conversation. The last slide, the one with no title, goes on the back of the what/where/when card for overflow. I only use the back for meeting notes, generally, so there's no boxes on the ruled slide.

    The PDF is in the zip, as is the Draw file. So you can just print or you can tweak the forms.
